In 1929, the Welte Cinema Organ was built for a film palace in Chemnitz. It has subsequently been used at the Filmmuseum Potsdam since the start of the 90s to accompany silent films. The Arsenal in-house pianist Eunice Martins will now be playing the cinema organ there for the first time. Her selection of silent films are representative of the diversity of early cinema and will be shown predominantly on analogue 16mm or 35mm film – with a 16mm projector from the cinema auditorium. The five titles are documentaries and create a connection between Berlin and Potsdam (MIT L.35 ÜBER BERLIN UND POTSDAM, Germany 1918), make reference to the central role of women directors in the early years of cinema and the film avant-garde (DANSE SERPENTINE, Alice Guy, France 1902 und LA SOURIANTE MADAME BEUDET, Germaine Dulac, France 1923), show rhythmic abstraction (JEUX DES REFLETS ET DE LA VITESSE, Henri Chomette, France 1925) and horror (THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, James Sibley Watson, Melville Webber, USA 1928), for which the noise-generating components of the cinema organ can also be used.(Birgit Acar/Annette Lingg)
